Dinner & discussion – The Lady In The Temple

Theologian Dr Margaret Barker draws together extensive evidence that, prior to the destruction of the first temple in Jerusalem in the 8th Century BCE, a feminine divine figure was worshipped both in the Temple, in other places in the wilderness and in people’s homes. She appears to have been a central figure of Hebrew religious devotion.

This month’s discussion features a recap of Bishop Tim’s talk about Dr Barker’s research at the recent AJC Conclave in Montreal, followed by discussion and play with the ideas.

Dinner discussions are an informal time to meet and get to know each other, to discuss what we’re reading, ask questions, and share ideas and experiences.

Dinner & discussion – Feb

Topic: Gnostic views of the physical world

The difference between the differing gnostic traditions (e.g. Valentinian Gnosticism v Manichean-influenced groups) as to whether our current world is actually:

  • totally bad,
  • part-bad but redeemable, or
  • actually quite good

These nights are an informal time to meet and get to know each other, but also to discuss what we’re reading, ask questions, and share ideas and experiences.

Dinner!

This month, we started a new thing – dinner. Well, a new thing for the parish; obviously dinner has happened several times before in human history.

We almost always have dinner after a Eucharist liturgy and the conversation always flows. But, it’s quick – everyone needs to get home. There’s not much time to get to know each other, or cover much ground.

I know most regulars pretty well, so I know that everyone who attends St Uriel’s has years of spiritual experience, extensive reading and study on lots of topics and a lot of inner depth. But it takes time to find all that out about someone.

So, once a month, more or less, I’ll be hosting a dinner somewhere public so that we can all get to hear more from each other and discover what I already know – what fascinating, inspiring, deep people you all are.

Make sure you check out the Event Calendar and put the dates in your diary and we’ll see you there next month!
